Similarities and Differences between Hoist and Crane

It is often the case that when some is referring to a hoist it is mistaken for them referring to the entire Crane, when in fact they are two very different equipments.  It is a fact that they are both commonly used in the construction and manufacturing industry and you could be forgiven for mistaking them to be the same if you do not come the construction background because it is slightly difficult to understand in that case. They can be considered similar in many ways though they are quite different.

They are similar because both are involved in the lifting of heavy loads and transferring them from one place to another. They both are also used in construction and mining activities and thus could be called similar in some aspects. Pulley and rope is used to move around construction material also providing a means to transport people in the same manner which is again common to both the hoist and the crane.

The main difference between a hoist and a crane is in their ability to move and the complexity of their design. Both are used to transfer objects from one place to another though a hoist can lift or lower only vertically while a crane can also move horizontally. In addition to which some of the more advanced cranes can even rotate the objects in three dimensions.  A good example of the hoisting mechanism at work is an elevator. An elevator can only move up or down and travel in a straight path within the shaft, which is exactly what a hoist can do.  To better understand the crane mechanism we could consider the example of a claw game machine. The claw game machine consists of a small crane used to retrieve an object considered as the price.  As most of us must have had first hand experience at such games it is easy to understand how it is possible to move the small crane around left and right and up and down opening the claw to grab the object.

A hoist crane can be an independent machine and can also be used as a sub system in a crane. Thus a crane is a more complicated device that can do all that a hoist can do and more. Hoist India is a company which has been in the the field of manufacture of hoists for around 30 years.
